MYTH-BUSTERS!
Heard any good stories lately?
Concerned that your part of the community or some part of the community is being falsely or negatively presented to others?
FREE MYTHBUSTING TRAINING
Q. What are “myths”? A. In this case “myths” refers to stories told about certain groups, communities or issues that are completely untrue or highly exaggerated but are believed to be true as they are repeated so often. “Everyone knows it’s true” but is it really?
Q. Why do these myths create problems? A. Because they usually present a very negative picture of the people or issues concerned and they help to fuel prejudice and misunderstandings between communities. They lead to people believing things that are untrue and treating others differently or unfairly.
Q. What is myth busting? A. We show you the truth behind the myth. We look at the real facts and figures and share factual information with as many people as we can through using the media and talking to groups and individuals.
Q. What does the training involve? A. Working in small groups so all get a chance to contribute we start with general help and advice to help you to learn or improve skills in public speaking – a useful skill for anyone – then we will look at some common myths that are put about in your area, who puts them around and why, and then we provide you with the actual facts to help you to counteract these myths wherever you come across them. You will then get the chance to practice myth busting presentations
Q. How will this training help me or my group? A. It will help you to better understand the wider community where you live and the issues and needs that affect it. It can help you develop better services that meet real rather than perceived need. The public speaking practice is useful for everyone as it is a valuable transferable skill.
Q. Is there any further support once the training session is over? A. Yes! After the initial training there will be someone to help and support you to do a myth-busting presentation on a subject of your choice to a group which you are involved in. You will also be able to get regular support, additional myth-busting information or training as you require it and additional training on Equality and Human Rights, including the Equality Act 2010
Q. How much does the training cost? A. Nothing! It is absolutely free and all materials and light refreshments will be provided.
Q. When and where will the training be held? A. The next initial Training and briefing will be available at Barking & Dagenham REC office. Unit 2, 30 Thames Road, Barking IG11 0HZ on Monday 9th August from 6.30 – 9 p.m. To book, please telephone: 020 8594 2773 or email: bardag_rec@yahoo.co.uk
